Based in the Spanish city Granada since 1996, Munira studied under the expertise of one of Granada’s last leather carvers, Diego Campos Mariscal; learning the ‘cordoban’ and ‘Guardemici’ influenced styles of tooled and carved leather. Munira has now established a thriving leather business where she produces exquisite leather items including wall hangings, notebooks and handbags, delicately decorated in Arabic calligraphy or geometric designs and stained in beautiful shades of colours complimenting the brown leather. Moorish art was initially developed in the 8th century in North Africa and Spain during the growth of the Islamic Empire. Early examples of Moorish art in Spain include the Great Mosque in Cordoba (785-c.1000) commissioned by Abd ar-Rahman and the Alhambra Fortress in Grenada.
